Kim Kardashian West sued over selfie case design

Image
Kim Kardashian West's company is being sued over a selfie case. The LuMee smartphone case, which is promoted by Kimisaprincess Inc, comes with an integrated light to help users take the perfect selfie. But now a man called Hooshmand Harooni has claimed in a $100m (£75m) lawsuit that the idea was copied from him. He says he patented an "integrated lighting accessory and case for a mobile phone device" in 2013, which he licensed to a company called Snaplight. Mr Harooni's patent infringement lawsuit reportedly claims Snaplight's profits have suffered as a result of the LuMee case and Kardashian's promotion of it. Kardashian receives a cut of LuMee's profits, according to the court documents. In a statement, Snaplight's founder Bardia Rahim said LuMee "created doubt in our technological and operational integrity" by launching the product. "It's illegal to try and monopolise the market, but more than that, it's un-A...

John Terry and Chelsea to face no FA action over 26th-minute substitution

John Terry and Chelsea will face no further action from the Football Association (FA) regarding the former club captain's substitution in his final game at Stamford Bridge. The 36-year-old arranged to leave the field against Sunderland in the 26th minute - matching his shirt number. Thousands of pounds were won in bets predicting the timing of the change last season, prompting the FA's Integrity Department to investigate. It decided there is no case to answer. Shortly before the game, the editor of a Chelsea fanzine had tweeted that Terry would be withdrawn after 26 minutes. One bookmaker said it had paid out on three bets, with one customer claiming he had been paid at 100-1 on a £25 stake. The FA then asked the betting companies involved for information on bets they received on the substitution. But it is understood it found no evidence to suggest there was inside information intended for the purposes of betting and no deliberate attempt at so-called spot-fixi...

Jesus Navas: Sevilla sign ex-Manchester City winger on four-year contract

Image
Spain winger Jesus Navas has rejoined Sevilla on a free transfer after he was released by Manchester City. Navas, 31, joined City from the La Liga side on a four-year deal worth £14.9m in June 2013. He made 173 appearances for City, scoring eight goals, but played just 24 league games last season. Navas' contract with City expired in the summer, leading him to return to Sevilla, where he began his career, on a four-year deal. He was part of the Sevilla side that won the Uefa Cup in 2006 and 2007 but suffered from chronic homesickness, which led him to turn down a move to Chelsea in 2006. Navas will break Sevilla's appearance record if he makes 27 more appearances for the club. He played 393 times in his first spell, with Juan Arza Inigo holding the record on 419.

The 'creepy Facebook AI' story that captivated the media

Image
The newspapers have a scoop today - it seems that artificial intelligence (AI) could be out to get us. "'Robot intelligence is dangerous': Expert's warning after Facebook AI 'develop their own language'", says the Mirror . Similar stories have appeared in the Sun, the Independent, the Telegraph and in other online publications. It sounds like something from a science fiction film - the Sun even included a few pictures of scary-looking androids . So, is it time to panic and start preparing for apocalypse at the hands of machines? Probably not. While some great minds - including Stephen Hawking - are concerned that one day AI could threaten humanity, the Facebook story is nothing to be worried about. Where did the story come from? Way back in June, Facebook published a blog post about interesting research on chatbot programs - which have short, text-based conversations with humans or other bots. The story was covered by New Scientist and others a...

How White House officials were 'fooled by email prankster'

Image
A UK hacker reportedly fooled top White House officials into engaging in fake email exchanges. The self-proclaimed "email prankster" convinced a senior cyber security adviser he was the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, CNN says. He also goaded the then media chief, Anthony Scaramucci, in the guise of ex-chief of staff Reince Priebus. Concerns about cyber security are running high amid claims hackers interfered in the US election. The White House told CNN it was investigating the latest incident and took the issue very seriously. The prankster posted some of the email exchanges on Twitter , where he describes himself as a "lazy anarchist", and said he was doing it for fun. On Tuesday he promised not to target the White House again, but said "you need to tighten up IT policy". Here are three of the most memorable parts of the hoax: 1. Security adviser gives out personal email address Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert was appar...

Ordering a Diet Coke is the worst thing you can do to your flight attendant — here's why

Image
The INSIDER Summary: Due to its carbonation, Diet Coke allegedly causes inconveniences for flight attendants while pouring drinks on airplanes. Flight attendants report that it takes about three times as long to pour Diet Coke from a can than it does other beverages. There are plenty of things passengers can do to drive flight attendants crazy , although ordering a certain diet soda might be an inconvenience you've never thought about. Diet Coke's carbonation makes it hard to pour without overflowing the cup with bubbles. As a result, it takes flight attendants significantly longer to pour Diet Coke than other beverages, including other sodas. "Of all the drinks we serve, Diet Coke takes the most time to pour — the fizz takes forever to settle at 35,000 feet. In the time it takes me to pour a single cup of Diet Coke, I can serve three passengers a different beverage," Heather Poole, a flight attendant, wrote on her blog . The reason why Diet Coke tak...

Chelsea could start the Community Shield against Arsenal without Alvaro Morata, hints Antonio Conte

Image
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is considering leaving Alvaro Morata out of his starting line-up for this weekend’s Community Shield against Arsenal over fears about his match fitness. 24-year-old Morata has only made one start for Chelsea in pre-season since joining from Real Madrid in the summer for at least £58m, and it leaves him short on his fitness levels that has left his manager weighing up whether to risk him in this Sunday’s annual curtain-raiser at Wembley. Having starting the 2-1 defeat by Inter Milan on Saturday on the left of a front-three, Morata failed to make an impact on the match and was replaced by Jeremie Boga in the 65th minute.  Conte, who signed Morata for Juventus in 2014 only to leave the Italian side to join the national team set-up, admitted afterwards that the Spain striker is not yet where he would like him to be ahead of the new Premier League season, and hinted that he could leave him out of the starting line-up this Saturday to ...

Trump aides’ stunning cry for help: Admitting the president misled the American people

Image
President Trump hates leaks. He hired Anthony Scaramucci 10 days ago to very publicly root them out, and he has even attacked his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, for not investigating them aggressively enough. But oftentimes with Trump, a leak isn't just a leak; it's an effort to save him from himself. Such is the case with The Washington Post's big scoop Monday night that Trump personally dictated the highly misleading initial statement about Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer  in June 2016. Anonymous White House advisers said they had settled on a plan to be transparent about the meeting, only to have the president come in at the 11th hour and decide to try and withhold the whole truth. The result, at Trump's personal direction, was a statement that claimed the meeting was about adoption, when in fact the stated purpose of it was opposition research -- supposedly from the Russian government -- about Hillary Clinton. [White House dire...

Image
Almost 500 people arrested after last year's failed coup in Turkey have appeared in court accused of taking part in the plot. Some of the handcuffed defendants were jeered as they were individually escorted into court by police and armed guards in front of TV cameras. The trial focuses on events at the Akinci airbase which it is alleged was the plotters' headquarters. It is taking place in a purpose-built courtroom outside the capital Ankara. The defendants face charges from attempting to assassinate the president to murder. As some arrived at court they were met by protesters chanting "We want the death penalty!" Some of the demonstrators had relatives killed or injured during the coup attempt and threw nooses towards the suspects. Rebel soldiers tried to grab power in July 2016, leaving 249 civilians dead. Military chief Gen Hulusi Akar and other senior officers were held hostage at the base for several hours on the night that the coup took place. T...
